Chapter 25
KATIE STOOD IN FRONT of the mirror, assessing her hair as she slowly removed the curlers. This wasn’t exactly her idea of a good time, but Elliott had sent her a new product, wanting her endorsement, and she needed to see if it worked.
She removed the last hot curler and swung her hair back and forth.
Wow. Holds pretty well.
Giving her long locks a spritz of the accompanying expensive spray, she ran her fingers through the luxurious strands. Soft. Silky. Wavy. If she was going to endorse something, she had to like the product. It didn’t happen very often, but this one might be a keeper.
Standing with her hands on her hips, she glanced around the untidy room. She knew she needed to open the boxes her mother sent and try on the gowns within them, but she’d wasted enough time on this stuff. I’ve already spent more time in front of the mirror today than I have in the past month.
After stacking the boxes in a corner to make things a little neater, Katie spotted a pair of jeans with threadbare knees. Grabbing a pair of scissors, she cut off the legs, frayed the ends a bit, and then tried them on.
How about that? A brand new pair of fashionably tattered shorts. Grammy would be proud of my domestic skills.
Pleased with herself for recycling the jeans, Katie went into the kitchen to wash dishes. She’d finished rinsing the last one when she heard the familiar sound of Will’s four-wheeler coming up the lane from his cottage.
When she stepped out onto the porch, he was cutting the engine, staring straight ahead as if deep in thought. He wore a flannel shirt with the sleeves rolled up, revealing brown arms bare to the elbows.
“What are you doing? It’ll be dark soon,” she said, as if announcing something he didn’t know. Already the sun was sliding below the horizon, smearing the sky with vivid hues along its path.
Katie thought his eyes brightened a bit when their gazes met. Her heart warmed with the hope of it, and her spine tingled at the strangeness of it.
“I have lights.” He clicked them on for her to see.
She turned her attention to Zeke, who lay down where he had stopped as if waiting for the conversation to end. In the hills beyond, daylight continued to bleed away, casting a reddish glow on the horizon where the sun was slipping out of sight.
“You going somewhere?” he asked.
Katie cocked her head. “No. Why?”
He shrugged in reply, which made Katie remember her hair was down...and curled.
“Then do you think you could give me a hand with something?”
The look he shot her gave Katie pause. “With what exactly?” She walked over and patted Zeke on the head.
“If I tell you, you won’t want to help. You in or not?”
One more glance at those brilliant blue eyes and half-shy smile made up Katie’s mind for her. She started to skip toward him, but he stopped her.
“You’re going to need shoes. Boots would be better.
